Abstract:Groundwater is an important part of the ecological environment and a precious natural resource. It has become one of the main water sources for Industry and agriculture in Shandong province. It has made great contributions to the economic and social development. In recent years, accompanyig with continuous development and utilization of groundwater, the water quality has been obviously deteriorated, and the water level has continued to decline, which has caused a serious problem. A series of geological environmental problems have restricted social and economic development. In this paper, the development and evolution of groundwater monitoring work since 1950s have been reviewed, the characteristics of monitoring work in various periods have been summarized, the promotion brought by national and provincial groundwater monitoring projects for groundwater monitoring work in Shandong province have been analyzed, the contents and means of groundwater monitoring have been introduced, and great role of social economy of groundwater monitoring which have played in development has been summarized. Finally, in view of the existing problems in groundwater monitoring, such as the monitoring network of key monitoring areas should be improved, the proportion of specialized monitoring wells should be upgraded, the automatic monitoring capability should be slightly inadequate, the monitoring funding guarantee system is not perfect, and the information sharing mechanism is not perfect, it is put forward that the planning and construction of the station network should be strengthened, the technical standards should be improved, and multisectoral information sharing mechanism and enhancement of achievement technology research should be established.
